On October 28, 2026, Cummins, a global leader in power technology, officially launched its highly anticipated S29 mining engine. The launch event took place at Chongqing Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. This marks another significant milestone for the S29, following the initial disclosure of information regarding the product during Cummins’ Analyst Day in May 2026.

The S29 is an all-new 29-liter engine platform developed from the ground up. It is specifically designed for 90- to 120-ton class mining dump trucks and 150- to 220-ton class excavators, while also being well-suited for a wide range of other mining and industrial equipment, including surface mining machines, bulldozers, wheel loaders, and drainage pumps. The engine is scheduled to be available for the global market starting in mid-2027.

Today, we are launching more than just a brand-new engine; we are setting a new benchmark for power in the mining sector. The Cummins S29 integrates a range of innovative advantages—including superior fuel economy, high reliability, and high power density—to deliver robust performance for our customers, while offering an optimized total cost of ownership over the entire product lifecycle and the flexibility to meet future needs.

The S29 features exceptional power density, delivering a maximum output of 1,300 horsepower (at 2,100 rpm, intermittent rating; final specifications subject to verification and certification). Its compact footprint offers power and performance comparable to larger-displacement engines, providing greater flexibility for vehicle integration. At launch, the S29 is designed to meet China’s Stage III emission standards for non-road mobile machinery, with emission levels equivalent to the U.S. EPA Tier 2 standard.
Fuel efficiency was a primary focus during the development of the S29. Based on current development targets, the engine is expected to achieve a minimum brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) as low as 180 g/kWh under specific operating conditions—positioning it as a class-leader in fuel economy for its power range and helping customers reduce their operating costs.
Another key highlight of the S29 is its multi-fuel capability, offering the flexibility to support customers’ evolving fuel strategies. At launch, the engine will be compatible with diesel, paraffinic fuels compliant with the EN 15940 standard (such as hydrotreated vegetable oil, or HVO), and biodiesel blends up to B50. The platform is also designed with the potential for future adaptation to natural gas, hydrogen, or dual-fuel configurations.
Furthermore, the S29 is engineered for the demanding environments of high-altitude and remote mining sites; it maintains full power output at altitudes of up to 3,000 meters and is capable of cold-starting in temperatures as low as -25°C without the need for auxiliary preheating.
Mining customers consistently face multiple pressures: the need to increase material haulage capacity, reduce operating costs, and improve efficiency. We are excited to introduce a new generation of mining power—the S29—to our customers. This platform is purpose-built for mining applications, designed to help customers transform these challenges into greater productivity and profitability.

The S29 will be manufactured at Chongqing Cummins. As Cummins’ sole intelligent manufacturing base for high-horsepower engines in China, Chongqing Cummins will leverage its strengths—including local intelligent manufacturing capabilities, a mature production system, and a skilled workforce—to reinforce oversight across the entire production process. This will ensure consistent product quality, providing a reliable foundation for the manufacturing and delivery of the S29 to the global market.

Produced in Chongqing and serving the global market, the S29 is a vivid example of Cummins’ commitment to local roots and global connectivity. Innovation has earned us attention, while excellence in delivery has secured long-term trust. The success of the S29 should be measured not merely by its debut today, but by its ability to consistently boost productivity in real-world operations, stand the test of time through reliable performance, and create long-term value for our customers and the local community.
